Facts You Should Know About Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. In addition periodontal disease has also associated with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease diabetes, low birth weight babies, and respiratory disease. It could affect a single tooth or multiple teeth. Upon dental examination the dentist will determine the periodontal health of the patient. Risk factors such as smoking, diabetes etc could increase the probability of developing periodontitis. Periodontal disease could present as gums that are enlarged, bleed easily or pulled away from your teeth. You could also suffer from bad breath or loose teeth.

Periodontal (gum) disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums.

In the early stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, the gums can become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing.

In the more advanced stages of periodontal disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged. Teeth could lossen and fall out. Early detection and treatment of gum disease will help prevent tooth loss.
